Warning: This article has spoilers for Higurashi: When They Cry.

Shion Sonozaki is the twin sister of Mion Sonozaki from Higurashi: When They Cry. She is most well known for her mental breakdown in the Watanagashi and Meakashi arcs of Higurashi. Her breakdown leads to a bloodbath in which she tortures and murders several people, believing them to be responsible for the disappearance of Satoshi Houjou, whom she loves.

Shion resembles her twin sister, having dark turquoise eyes and long emerald hair worn with two gold ribbons. She has short tent bangs framing her face and a fair complexion. She is normally found in the school uniform worn in the series.

Compared to her sister, Shion is feminine with a flirty, toying personality that can become selfish over her own wants or needs. She shares a lot in common with Mion, being playful and socially intelligent, and they both have a huge weakness dealing with romance, both also have a hatred of their grandmother and are good at manipulating people. But while Mion's manipulation can span to a crowd, Shion prefers manipulating a single person at a time on a personal level.

She is fairly unhinged but desperately craves affection from others. After befriending the main cast, she seemed to grow slightly better.

Growing up, Shion was abused by her family, once having to rip off three fingernails as punishment for liking Satoshi and being shipped off to a private boarding school, tearing her away from Mion. She escaped not too long afterwards with the help of her bodyguard Tatsuyoshi Kasai.

After her escape, she shared a home with Kasai in Okinomiya. She works at the Angel Mort restaurant while assisting the Hinamizawa Fighters little league team.

It is believed that she is actually the older twin of the Sonozaki twins, but at some point in the past, she and Mion switched identities as children.

Oryo Sonozaki - Tased by Shion and died from the shock. Her body was then whipped, causing severe lacerations on her scalp and head, and thrown down a well. Shion believed she had a part in the disappearance of Satoshi.

Rika Furude - Initially thought to have been tortured to death. In Meakashi, it is revealed that she and Shion got into a fight before getting a mysterious substance injected into her. She then commits suicide in front of Shion by stabbing herself with a knife. In some scenarios, she claws her throat out after stabbing herself.

Kiichiro Kimiyoshi - Shion believed he had a part in Satoshi's disappearance. After not revealing his whereabouts, he was tased and hung on a restraining device until he died.

Satoko Houjou - Tied to a cross and stabbed repeatedly with a dagger. In some scenarios, she dies of hemorrhagic shock the day afterward. In the anime, she is stabbed in the arms as a form of torture before finally being stabbed in the forehead. As Satoshi's little sister, Shion believed that she pushed him into a corner that drove him insane and that she lied to her when saying he would return home. She felt heavy remorse upon realizing that Satoko never did anything wrong, but by then, it was too late to save her.

Mion Sonozaki - Fell to her death in a well after being tased. Like Oryo, Shion believed that she had a part in Satoshi's disappearance.

Keiichi Maebara - Hit on the head with a rock and is planned to be tortured. He is spared, but later ends up being stabbed by Shion. Despite recovering in the hospital, he later dies of acute heart failure. In Watanagashi, he hallucinates being attacked by a bloody Shion (disguised as Mion).

Mion Sonozaki - While they share common traits, Mion and Shion are also very different. The twins often switch places with one another. While Mion seems to adore her sister to the point of suffering with her, Shion isn't above making her suffer if she thinks she deserves it. She supports her relationship with Keiichi, but isn't above flirting with him and using her charms to try to pull him away for her own amusement.

In Meakashi, as she slowly descends to madness, she starts blaming Mion for Satoshi's disappearance, believing she may have murdered him. Because of this, she imprisons her in the Sonozaki torture chamber, makes her watch several people die, and then kill her just before police can come to rescue her.

Satoshi Houjou - She became attached to him when he first showed her genuine kindness, but when he disappeared from Hinamizawa, she was completely devastated over it. She was convinced he lied to her, and it left her feeling bitter for some time. This explained a big part of her current personality.

Satoko Houjou - Shion treats Satoko like a little sister as a promise to Satoshi. In Meakashi, however, she blames her for Satoshi's disappearance and begins torturing her. She killed her after realizing it was too late to save her, and she feels heavy remorse over not taking care of her.

In other arcs of the series, Shion is shown having that same sister dynamic with Satoko, who refers to her as “Nee-Nee”. In the Minagoroshi arc, Shion decides to kill Satoko's uncle after finding out that he's abusing her, but is eventually talked out of it.

For torture or general use, she carries around a taser, but she is also shown capable of using a knife.

  1. In Watanagashi and Meakashi, she falls to her death while trying to climb back into her apartment.
  2. In a bad ending of Meakashi, she claws her throat and bleeds out (this is a console-exclusive ending).
  3. In Minagoroshi, she is shot by Miyo Takano.

"Satoshi? Where are you?! I've been waiting for you! I've been waiting for you ever since the last time we spoke!"

"Just in time! I did it! It's all done and it was all for you Satoshi! Ahahahahaha!"

"I'm sorry Satoshi. I didn't do what you asked me to. Everybody, I'm so sorry. Please forgive me. Next time, I won't make the same mistake. I promise..."
